After learning that Norton County public schools had approximately $6,000 in unpaid meal-account balances, incarcerated residents decided to help. Many of those balances came from breakfasts and lunches provided to children whose families were experiencing food insecurity.
Working with the nonprofit Reaching Out from Within, residents organized a fundraiser to reduce the district’s outstanding debt. The organization, which serves correctional facilities in Kansas, North Carolina, and Missouri, was founded in 1982 on the belief that incarcerated people remain valuable members of their communities. Residents contributed $3,810 from their own personal funds. Kansas Department of Corrections employees then added $457, bringing the campaign’s final total to $4,267.
